What is White Mischief?
White Mischief is a one night indoor festival combining unique live musical acts with some of the most astonishing vaudeville and circus performers around.
Added to the mix are interactive experiences, spontaneous encounters with musicians and costumed characters in unexpected quarters… and a range of DJs representing every genre from jazz, blues and rock’n'roll to country and world music.
With four rooms of entertainment, two music stages and another room for those who want VIP tickets, there’s an extraordinary abundance of fun to be had during the seven hours of a White Mischief party. It’s a show from start to finish, so we invite guests to arrive as early as they can to be sure of catching everything.
No wonder Time Out called White Mischief “event of the week, the month, the year“!
Todd Hart
You may know Todd Hart from his DJ appearances at Durrr, but he originally caught our attention as proprietor of the unique MP3 blog “Dalston Oxfam Shop Blog”, which takes music that has by some been consigned to the bargain bin of life and puts it in front of the hipster digerati, uploaded and ready for the iPod generation to enjoy.
One fascinating seam of discoveries within the blog has a decidedly African flavour, which may have as much to do with the fact that Todd grew up in Kenya and Tanzania as it does with with the fact that the occasional African mixtape found its way into the Dalston second-hand shop. But there’s no doubt that Todd Hart has pioneered the current crossover between world or African-influenced sounds blended with bands or dance music, with his Manifesto party pushing forward the boundaries every Tuesday night at the Burlington Club. Todd has agreed to play an all-African set at White Mischief and will be playing from the peak of the night in the main room.

Among the most respected DJs of jazz on the cabaret and dressup scene, Lady Kamikaze is host of the Black Cotton Club and regularly appears with her partner El Nino at the Lady Luck Club. There’s no questioning her dedication to classic style and authentic vintage music, which is why any night with Kamikaze on the decks is bound to swing.
Since she last played at White Mischief, Lady Kamikaze has featured in a glamorous fashion shoot in the newspapers while the Black Cotton / Lady Luck empire of clubs has gone from strength to strength. Not forgetting, of course, the amazing Black Cotton vintage retailer at the Stables market in Camden, which should be a staple for any buyer of vintage clothers. Ophelia Bitz is a good friend to White Mischief, having performed at the last two shows – notably before a crowd of bemused budding life-drawing students when Dr. Sketchy held a salon at our Conway Hall show. Recently Ms. Bitz has been on stage with the brilliant Tiger Lilies as part of their London show; she’s also a notable MC and club promoter in her own right, as well as being known by the masses for her appearances with pop singer Mika and scary magician Derren Brown. With so many talents to spare, Ophelia has been invited to curate her own space at this White Mischief and will be putting together the mysterious “Hall of Oracles”.
Sefi, snake dancer
Appearing in White Mischief’s mysterious “Hall of Oracles” will be Sefi, dancing with a real snake and offering audiences the chance to get up close and personal with the serpent.

In perfect keeping with our neo-Victorian stylings, White Mischief is proud to present “Victorian comedy troupe” The Penny Dreadfuls, from Radio 4, BBC3 and BBC7′s “The Brothers Faversham”. The lucky ones among you may have caught the Penny Dreadfuls’ five-star-reviewed sketch show “Aenaes Faversham Returns” at the Edinburgh Festival but their current shows at the Etcetera Theatre in London are all sold out, so White Mischief will be the main chance for you to catch them in action before they start a new run at the Greenwich Theatre late in June and then go on to yet another Edinburgh run. Hooligan Night
Delinquent showgirl Ruby Blues will be familiar to some of you as queen of Glastonbury’s crazed Trash City area; she also appeared at the last White Mischief. Now she’s back, playing the main stage at White Mischief on Saturday June 7 with her twisted, psychotic electro-dub band Hooligan Night.
Hooligan Night formed in 2006 when production maestro Nik Diezel met apocalyptic pin-up Ruby Blues, one of the superstars of the London neo-burlesque scene.

It’s a mission at White Mischief to find live musical artistes who are willing to step over the precipice with a bold visual and sonic identity, and The Outside Royalty are a perfect example. Using cello, violin and synths to create a sound they call “electro chamber rock”, and based out of a squalid Victorian terrace, few bands could be as well suited to the steampunk vaudevile of a White Mischief show as this six piece. Ebony Bones
When we started White Mischief, there was only one rule about the kinds of bands we’d book. It doesn’t matter what genre, what style of music they make…as long as they are completely different, brilliant live and a world away from the dour indie fodder that can be found at the usual toilet venues. If there’s an act that embodies the spirit of what we’re looking for in terms of risque theatricality and undeniable uniqueness it’s Ebony Bones. Flying in from Berlin to be Mistress of Ceremonies in the main stage room at White Mischief is the incomparable Miss Behave, one of the last living female swordswallowers and a Guinness World Record holder to boot.
Having toured everywhere from the Edinburgh Festival to Canada to Australia with the Spiegeltent’s outrageous vaudeville show La Clique, Miss Behave is preparing for her own run at London’s Roundhouse. White Mischief is your chance not only to see this eccentric comedienne in action, but also to catch a preview of a few acts she’ll be performing in the Roundhouse show.
